Second Stage of Sketches
The reason I choose the Renaissance as a reference is because this correlates with gender equality. During this period, building, squares and gardens took a symmetrical appearance, with pure forms. This resulted in the spaces becoming more balanced and harmonious. In relation to this all genders should be treated in balance and harmony.
Italian Renaissance gardens were enclosed in walls and were devoted to growing fruits, vegetables and medicinal herbs, some gardens were made for silence and prayer. The purpose of a garden, according to Pliny, was otium, which could be translated as seclusion, serenity, or relaxation, which was the opposite of the idea of negotium that often classified busy urban life. A garden was a place to think, relax, and escape.

Third Stage of Sketches
Images below: Schouwburgplein is a big open space. I wanted to try and split the space up into several section but still remaining coherent to one another. Taking information from the Renaissance floor plans, i wanted to interpret the idea of not having corridors. I like the idea of walking through the space as a journey into several spaces. I thought this could be an interesting experiment with how we experience public space. Could we design a space that are several sections that the lead into each other without paths.
In my design. I have translated the masculine and feminine sign into pyramid shapes that go up into the sky and below in to the ground. The overall shape has been inspired by Carlos Scarpa and the public square Magic Breeze I did not make the upper-Masculine shape to high due to the fact of visibility, as women need to feel safe.

Fourth Stage of Sketches
Image 1: I layed out the paths of where I would like people to be directed, taking into account the goals and the main buildings that surround the square
Image 2: This leads to me on to my final design. Unfortunately, i ran out of time to finish it, however I needed to see how my geometries, especially heights , would work in correlation with the square.

Below: Cross Section showing heights of surrounding buildings
Below: Is a cross section of a design element that will be placed in the centre of the square.
Color
In my final design I chose to use three colours. White, green and red. I picked white and green due to the Rotterdam Flag, and red to tie the square in with the surrounding buildings. I also picked red because according to the Case Study of White Architects in desk research. They found out that girls have a preference for bold color and form.

Mood Boards
Overall Structural Feel
Large open spaces split into intimate private spaces without sacrificing the feel of openness.
Lighting
The ideas below represent lighting design within public space. Safety is an important need for women within public space. An idea to provide security is to show illuminating floors when soemone walks on the paths at night, see Image 1 for reference.
